Manchester United Secures Deal for Joshua Zirkzee

Manchester United has reached an agreement with Bologna to activate Joshua Zirkzee’s €40 million (£33.7 million) release clause, according to reports from Italy.

United’s Strategic Transfer Moves

With Erik ten Hag confirmed to continue as manager, Manchester United has focused on acquiring a new striker and strengthening their defense ahead of the upcoming Premier League season. Joshua Zirkzee, who netted 11 goals in Serie A last season, emerged as a top target. The 23-year-old striker was also pursued by AC Milan, but United successfully outmaneuvered the competition.

AC Milan’s Stalled Negotiations

AC Milan initially agreed with Zirkzee but hesitated over an additional €15 million (£12.6 million) commission demanded by the player’s agent, Kia Joorabchian. This delay opened the door for Manchester United, who quickly moved to finalize personal terms with Zirkzee through direct discussions with Erik ten Hag.

Finalizing the Deal

United deliberated on whether to pay Zirkzee’s full €40 million (£33.7 million) release clause or negotiate a structured deal with Bologna involving a lower upfront payment with add-ons. Ultimately, they chose to trigger the release clause, informing Bologna of their decision and agreeing to the additional €15 million (£12.6 million) commission.

Bayern Munich’s Gain

Bayern Munich, Zirkzee’s previous club, stands to benefit significantly from this transfer due to a 45% sell-on clause included in the deal that sent Zirkzee to Bologna for €8.5 million (£7 million) in August 2022.

Zirkzee’s Current Focus

Currently, with the Netherlands national team, Zirkzee is preparing for the Euro 2024 semi-final against England. He recently made his senior debut in a 2-1 victory over Turkey in the quarter-finals. When questioned about his future post-match, Zirkzee hinted at uncertainty, saying, “I don’t know, let’s see,” when asked if he would remain in Italy next season.
