Manchester United Targets Rangnick-Endorsed Striker to Replace Martial
Manchester United is actively seeking a new striker this summer and may turn to the Premier League for their next addition.
Rasmus Hojlund’s debut season at United was impressive. The Danish striker joined from Atalanta last summer, quickly rising from a lesser-known player at Sturm Graz to a key figure at Old Trafford. Despite some challenges, Hojlund ended the season with 16 goals across all competitions, setting a solid foundation for the future. However, with Anthony Martial’s departure as his contract ends, United needs additional firepower up front.
United’s Interest in Matheus Cunha
To fill this gap, United might look to Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers. According to The Mirror, United scouts have been closely monitoring Cunha, and he is now a top target. The club is reportedly willing to double Cunha’s current wages, offering him up to £120,000-a-week to lure him to Old Trafford. Wolves have set a £60 million price tag for Cunha, which means United could end up paying nearly twice the £35 million Wolves spent on him in 2023.
Cunha had a strong season with Wolves, scoring 12 goals and providing seven assists in 32 Premier League games. United fans may remember Cunha from previous transfer rumors. In August 2022, United was reportedly close to signing him from Atletico Madrid for £42 million, but the deal fell through, and Cunha moved to Wolves instead.
Rangnick’s Influence on Cunha
Former United manager Ralf Rangnick played a significant role in Cunha’s career. Rangnick brought Cunha to RB Leipzig from Swiss side Sion in 2018 and praised his “speed and offensive drive,” calling him a “highly interesting” player. Although Cunha scored only nine goals in 52 games for Leipzig, he showed flashes of potential that caught Rangnick’s eye. Cunha later moved to Hertha Berlin, Atletico, and then Wolves, gradually realizing the promise Rangnick saw in him.
Now, United is considering Cunha’s versatility and offensive skills as they prepare for the summer transfer window. Adding a player of Cunha’s caliber could provide the depth and competition needed to bolster United’s attack for the upcoming season.
