Ruud van Nistelrooy Considers Manchester United Return

Ruud van Nistelrooy, the iconic former Manchester United striker, is reportedly “very tempted” to join the club’s coaching staff this summer. According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, the 47-year-old is contemplating an opportunity to work alongside Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Van Nistelrooy’s potential return to United is part of a broader strategy to revamp the backroom staff, with ten Hag keen to bring in experienced and influential figures. This move aligns with recent reports suggesting that Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite is also eager to join the Red Devils this summer.

Previously linked to a managerial role at Burnley following Vincent Kompany’s departure, Van Nistelrooy now seems inclined to accept a position as an assistant coach at Manchester United. His illustrious career at United, where he netted 150 goals in 219 appearances between 2001 and 2006, has left an indelible mark on the club.

Since retiring in 2012, Van Nistelrooy has amassed considerable coaching experience. He started as an assistant manager for the Netherlands national team, later joining PSV Eindhoven’s coaching staff. In 2022, he ascended to the role of head coach at PSV, where he led the team to victory in the 2023 Johan Cruyff Shield and the 2022–23 KNVB Cup. Despite his successes, he resigned from PSV due to “insufficient support” within the club.

Van Nistelrooy’s Potential Role at Manchester United

In his Daily Briefing podcast, Romano highlighted Van Nistelrooy’s keen interest in the Manchester United role:

“What I’m hearing is that Ruud van Nistelrooy is very tempted by this possibility to go back to Manchester United. He’s still keeping his options open, but in the last 24-48 hours, Van Nistelrooy is really tempted to make this new experience as an assistant coach. So I think there’s a very good possibility.”

Romano also hinted that Van Nistelrooy might not be the only new addition to the Manchester United staff, suggesting that further changes could be on the horizon as the club aims to strengthen its coaching team.

As part of the backroom restructuring, Ten Hag is reportedly pushing for striker coach Benni McCarthy to receive a new contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of June.
