Rising Star Declares Departure After Euro 2024: Arsenal Ready to Pounce
A highly regarded player on Mikel Arteta’s radar has informed his club that he plans to depart once Euro 2024 concludes. Following Arsenal’s unsuccessful attempt to sign Benjamin Sesko earlier this month, Edu is now steering the club’s transfer window in a different direction.
Although Arsenal never intended to sign a striker this summer, Sesko’s brief availability was seen as an irresistible market opportunity. Instead, Arteta aims to strengthen depth in other areas, specifically at full-back, in wide attacking positions, and central midfield.
With Kai Havertz excelling as a striker and Gabriel Jesus staying put unless a significant offer comes in, Arsenal is well-stocked in the forward position. Consequently, the club has been linked to Xavi Simons, a versatile young winger from Paris Saint-Germain who can thrive in various attacking roles.
Simons, currently representing the Netherlands at Euro 2024, has started both of their games so far. After the tournament, he is set to leave PSG.
Xavi Simons Informs PSG of Departure Plans
Journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed on social media that Simons has formally notified PSG of his intention to leave this summer. Romano stated: “Xavi Simons has formally informed Paris Saint-Germain about his plan to leave the club this summer. Key detail: it will be a loan move until June 2025, as mentioned since April. Bayern and RB Leipzig are both pushing to sign Xavi Simons. Decision after the Euros.”
Arsenal will face stiff competition to secure Simons this summer. However, with Emile Smith Rowe’s future in North London uncertain, the Dutchman could be a thrilling alternative. While Arsenal fans would be reluctant to lose Smith Rowe, Simons would be an excellent replacement if he seeks regular playing time elsewhere.
PSG’s Reluctance to Sell Simons This Summer
If Edu pursues a permanent move for Simons, it would likely cost around £52 million. However, PSG prefers to loan the 21-year-old due to a contract clause. If PSG sells Simons before January 2025, PSV Eindhoven, the club from which Simons re-joined PSG, would receive a significant portion of the transfer fee. Thus, selling him now is not in PSG’s best interest, even though his stock is at an all-time high.
Should Arsenal agree to a loan deal for Simons, they could potentially negotiate a permanent transfer in the summer of 2025. This scenario presents an intriguing possibility for the Gunners as they seek to bolster their squad with top talent.
