Arsenal’s Efforts to Retain Reuell Walters Despite Farewell Message

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is working to retain Reuell Walters, even after the young full-back seemingly bid farewell to fans on social media last month. Although Walters’ contract is nearing its end, the club has confirmed that negotiations for an extension are ongoing.

Walters, 19, has yet to make an appearance for Arsenal’s senior team and spent most of the last season in Premier League 2. Originally part of Tottenham’s academy, he moved to Arsenal in 2020 and has been on a steady path toward the first team.

Last month, Walters appeared to close this chapter of his career, posting a farewell message on X (formerly Twitter): “Thank you to everyone that’s made this part of my career special. It’s been a pleasure playing for this club and I wish you all the best for the future.”

In a surprising twist, Arsenal announced the release of 19 players when their contracts expire on June 30, but Walters’ name was notably absent. The club’s statement confirmed that discussions are still ongoing with Walters, as well as with fellow youngsters Amario Cozier-Duberry and Karl Hein.

Meanwhile, players like Tyreece John-Jules, Omari Benjamin, and James Hillson are preparing for free agency, hoping to find new clubs this summer. Senior players Cedric Soares and Mohamed Elneny, used sparingly last season, will also depart as Arsenal seeks fresh talent.

The Gunners are set to bolster their forward line, with new competition expected for Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus. RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates, with the striker reportedly keen to join Arsenal.
