Erik ten Hag Addresses Tyrell Malacia’s Absence at Manchester United

Erik ten Hag has shed light on the situation surrounding Tyrell Malacia, who missed the entire season for Manchester United. The 24-year-old defender, signed from Feyenoord for £13 million two years ago, has been sidelined following knee meniscus surgery last summer.

Malacia had a promising debut season with United, featuring 39 times and contributing to the team’s Carabao Cup victory and third-place finish in the Premier League. However, his progress was halted by his injury, leaving United struggling for options at left-back in his absence. At times, Antony even had to fill in briefly at this position.

In a statement to the Mirror, Ten Hag updated fans on Malacia’s status: “Malacia hasn’t played a minute all season. He hasn’t even been on the training pitch once. We recruited him as a backup for Luke Shaw, and the plan was for both to provide strong options. Malacia performed well last season, but this season we haven’t had him.”

Ten Hag continued: “This has been the toughest season I’ve ever experienced. I’ve had more contact with the club doctor than anyone else in the organization, which says it all.”

Regarding Luke Shaw, Ten Hag remarked: “Shaw is the best left-back in the world. However, his serious injury early in his career means he can’t play 60 games a year.”

Ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford is currently uncertain, with his contract set to expire next year. Despite having 12 months remaining, United are considering potential successors for the Dutch manager. With the summer transfer window opening on June 14, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has limited time to decide.

After leading United to FA Cup glory last month, Ten Hag told BBC One: “I am focused on preparing and developing my team. When I arrived, the situation was chaotic. We’ve improved, but we’re not where we want to be. Football is about winning trophies. I aim to play dynamic, attacking football, but ultimately, you need to win games and trophies. That’s the mentality we’ve instilled. This was our chance, and we seized it. I am very proud of the players and staff.”
